Why Choose West Broward Dental Associates for TMJ Treatment?
What is TMJ Disorder?
TMJ disorder, also known as TMD, is a condition that forms when the temporomandibular joints (TMJs) begin to click, pop, or become sore as a result of overuse and extreme pressure or tension. It can often occur as a result of stress, teeth grinding, or a misaligned bite, which is why it’s important that our dentists conduct a thorough examination to determine the underlying cause of your TMD and suggest the most effective form of treatment.
Symptoms of TMJ Disorder
Although you may suspect there is an issue with your jaw joints, you may not know for sure until you meet with Dr. Mihran or Dr. Armand. Some of the most prominent symptoms associated with TMJ disorder include:
- Pain radiating throughout the jaw, head, and neck
- Frequent headaches or migraines
- Jaw begins to click or pop
- Difficulty opening and closing your mouth
- Teeth no longer come together properly – misaligned bite
- Trouble chewing or eating certain foods
-
Mouth breathing
Types of TMJ Treatment
Treating TMJ disorder does not have to be a cumbersome task. Instead, our dentists can recommend equilibration/occlusal adjustment and/or an occlusal splint to improve your jaw function and allow for a better quality of life.
Equilibration / Occlusal Adjustments
If we find during our examination that your bite is “off,” we may suggest equilibration/occlusal adjustment. This process includes determining which teeth or restorations are causing your bite to no longer align properly. By making a few small adjustments to these teeth, we can ensure that your jaw and bite come together more fluidly, reducing any pressure placed on your jaw joints.
Occlusal Splints
If teeth grinding and excessive jaw pressure occur and are the reason for your TMJ disorder, we can recommend a customized occlusal splint. Designed using digital impressions of your teeth, we can create an oral device you can wear at night, during the day, or both. Not only will it keep your teeth from touching while you sleep, but it will also help your jaw to rest in a more comfortable position – an improvement that will become more permanent over time and alleviate any continuous pressure or tension on your jaw joints.
